We had a good first stay at Kanra Hotel, the place is clean and rooms OK, although the price is quite high and there is no space in the rooms to put our clothes (we tried 3 different rooms). Food from the restaurant is great, spa good. However my main concern is the service which is not solution oriented at all. First, impossible to get a drink from the bar at 8PM. Then, we were supposed to stay 9 nights there. We already stayed 5 nights with lots of side consumptions (room service, spa massage, restaurant, products from their shop) and decided to change the 4 next nights to another hotel which is cheaper and with more common areas to enjoy. The Kanra hotel refused any refund for the 4 nights that we canceled, no commercial gesture and made us pay everything without trying to find a solution for us. Impossible to find a manager to talk to. We were really disappointed and would not recommend this hotel. Indeed, client service and satisfaction is as important as the facilities itself and Kanra hotel has a lot to learn about that.
Lovely hotel, no complaints at all. I wouldn't go quite as far as some of the other overly enthusiastic reviews but it is a great hotel in a good location. Service is friendly and attentive, disappointing not to be able to have a decent coffee in the reception area considering that getting decent coffee in Kyoto before 9 or 10am isn't easy. They must have plenty of international coffee drinkers that would partake. Still, the best place we stayed in Japan and I would highly recommend
The rooms are cute and well decorated, but lacked a bit of space and counters to put out clothes and other items. Because of the lack of floor space, we could only really have one suitcase open at a time, and barely had room to store the other suitcases. The bathroom was large and spacious with a really nice wooden bath tub. The shower seemed like an after thought in the corner and didn't have a door so water would get everywhere outside the space of the shower. Our room faced a daycare and only had light curtains to cover the windows. If we wanted privacy, we had to close the paper panels which cuts off half the room from our bed area.
The service was normal and it didn't seem that the staff went out of their way to go above and beyond, so nothing memorable about that. The check in counters are all the way to the right when you first walk in which confused us when looking to check in.
The location is about a 10-20 minute walk from the Kyoto station depending on how fast you walk. Don't be fooled by the temple - it actually is pretty large and takes some time to walk past, especially if it's the end of the day and you're tired. We did our laundry at a coin place 10 minutes away in a residential area which was very pretty but we didn't find anything nearby that was conveniently outside. It's not a bad location, but I would consider staying closer to the attractions next time.
High price but NO service at all. Don’t even help with luggage to the room even with 50,000 - 80,000 yen rate of room. No service like in APA hotel but with a 4 stars room. The only nice thing was the room. Disappointed service.
Exceptional experience here! Very clean and modern, the breakfast is delicious, and the location is very central. I can’t recommend this place highly enough for your stay in Kyoto
This year, we have probably stayed in over 30 hotels and ryokans around Japan, and Hotel Kanra really stands out. Immaculate design, great location to explore center or Kyoto on foot or bicycle, decently sized rooms, lots of attention to details and outstanding breakfast spread. Worth every yen, totally recommended.
Look no further if you want a Ryokan experience for your accommodations. Easily one of the best hotels I’ve been in. Staff was really friendly! 10/10
My family of 16 enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are nice and spacious, staff was really friendly and helpful.
